January 20 - 28, 2017
Polaris Dance Theatre presents Groovin’ Greenhouse, a series of world premiere dance works by local companies, as part of the Fertile Ground Festival. Polaris, along with guest dance companies from every corner of Portland, are working with established and emerging Portland choreographers to present brand new dance works in Polaris Dance Theatre’s intimate black box theatre. In addition to guest companies featured at each performance, our patrons will be challenged by movement from the Polaris Dance Company, including world premiere work by Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Robert Guitron. The Polaris Dance Company will also feature work by Spanish Choreographer and Company Dancer, Gerard Regot. We’re proud to be presenting work by Polaris Dance Theatre’s Junior Company and Neo Youth Company on various evenings (see listings below). These young, energetic and talented dancers bring energy to the festival and will be performing work choreographed by Director, M’Liss Quinnly.
A-WOL Dance Collective, one of Portland’s favorite aerial dance companies, will perform new work by their professional aerial company. This innovative new piece will incorporate aerial silks and ropes.
Bringing fresh new dance work to the festival with multiple performers, the Bellydance Guild will display the vastly different facets of bellydance! Four main styles will be represented: Folkloric/Traditional, Cabaret/Orientale, Tribal Improv, and Theatrical/Fusion.
NW Fusion is under the direction of Brad Hampton. These young, energetic and talented dancers bring fresh new work to the festival. NW Fusion is a pre-professional dance company with the focus of preparing young artists for a career in the performing arts.
Les Watanabe’s work is inspired by the intriguing and deeply emotional music of Cuban singer, Bola de Nieve. Love Songs captures love in its varied forms and meanings, from longing, to joy, and to the pain of unrequited love. Featuring Emma Mochnick and Portland’s own, Laura Stilwell, Felice Moskowitz and Terry Brock. Costumes for the soloists were designed by Wendy Mathews.
There’s more than one way to get to the same destination. Polaris Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Robert Guitron is proud to present excerpts from Diverse-Divide, a new work being developed for April’s X-Posed Show. Guitron speaks to the divisive nature of politics and issues of racism in the world today: he explores movement that has identical elements yet is executed completely differently. He encourages the audience to remember to find beauty in our world’s diversity.
Gravitation reflects on Polaris Dance Company’s Kiera Brinkley’s career change. She says after making the change, “I continually had the urge to be moving while I was sitting at a desk. So this piece is, honestly, everything and every idea that I’ve had since changing careers. I wanted the dancers to be pushed and to be tired but still have to move; still have work to put in, still have a task to complete. I think we all have something that we desire to do, and I believe the dancers will have the desire to finish this piece, despite exhaustion. I wanted to make them work, so that’s what I did.” Music: Without You by Lapalux
Polaris Dance Company’s Gerard Regot will feature his choreography in, Overcoming, also the title of the attending music, written by Regot. This piece is a continuation of Awakening, performed during a previous Groovin’ Greenhouse. After Awakening, where our lives were disrupted by loss and the unexpected, sudden, immediate void that came with it, Overcoming talks about the moment after we process this loss and the difficulties of learning how to reach for help and move on.
Vitality Dance Collective presents Surroundings, an exploration of where we are and where we can only dream of going.
